He is best known for his early contributions to rap music including The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, a funky, funny social satire. These days, it's harder to convince me that the revolution will not be televised; I am certain that it will be televised, YouTubed, and brought to you by Little Debbie's Snack Cakes. But nonetheless, I believe that Scott-Heron's spirit is alive and well in the hearts of the American people. I would recommend not listening to this music with weapons around. You might want to use them. This week in our iPod, it's his and collaborator Brian Jackson's From South Africa to South Carolina, featuring sublime live versions of Save the Children, Barnwell, and the funky, stick-in-your-head-for-weeks hit Johannesburg. Listen as Scott-Heron scolds the crowd for not singing along with him, and uses the teachings of Che Guevarra to encourage more audience participation. Right on!
