Staff Pick of the Week: BOB DYLAN
Originally submitted by: Administrator
This week we're spinning Bob Dylan, folk hero, anti-hero, countercultural poet, and Pulitzer Prize Winner. This prize was a long time coming for one of the great artists of our time. Mimicked, mocked, and misunderstood more often than not, Dylan is an acquired taste, but an agreeable and friendly voice for music lovers. He changed music forever. His lyrics are cryptical and subversive, abstract and oddly sensible. His songs have been co-opted by the peace movement, the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, and bitter, depressed young people everywhere. But Dylan never allied himself to anyone. He worked better alone, saying what he had to say, often confusing, often unintelligible, and always fascinating. He is cold, distant, and sometimes very sweet and endearing. He is whomever we want him to be. His biography is a myth and a lie, he is a man without a past, without a personal life. Just a disembodied voice, and as he says, a red guitar, three chords, and the truth. I went to a Bob Dylan concert at the Toledo Zoo last summer and it was amazing. He still puts on a great show.
