Music is Amoral: Catching Up With Glenn Watkins

By BARTON BUND

Meeting the world's foremost expert on Composer Carlo Gesualdo is as intimidating as it might sound. The musicologist and author is almost singlehandedly responsible for reviving the work of the infamous murderer/genius chromaticist.

The Separation of Church and Theater

BY BARTON BUND, THE BLACKBIRD THEATER

Church gigs don’t pay. They only gave us the script a few minutes before we went on. We had the copy room for a dressing room. Blackbird Company Member Gayle Martin needed a favor. We went last Wednesday to put on a little skit at her Lutheran Church. This is a clear case of the need for actors to examine their ethics on a regular basis.

How Should We Find New Talent?

This is relevant to the advice column, because I would like to know how others deal with this. Further, I would particularly like to hear from Ann Arbor area performing artists and people in the business community about their thoughts. It is pertinent, because of the ongoing discussion we are having in Michigan about the loss of young people, and thus talent, and even genius from our state. (for information on this issue go to the website of Michigan Future, Inc: www.michiganfuture.org).

Staff Pick: FUNKADELIC

The dangerous, revolutionary pioneers of funk are this week's staff pick!

What is this thing called funk? You'll know it when you hear it. Southfield-based Funkadelic, also reincarnated as Parliament and P-Funk, will point you in the right direction.

Do Actors Have Ethics?

Most people just assume actors take any part they can get. And that actors will do anything, including acting unethically, to get a part. But, as it turns out, actors may have limits too. Or do they?

Find out by listening to the a2ethics.org-sponsored panel discussion hosted by Barton Bund, artistic director and co-founder of the Blackbird Theatre and a cast of veteran actors that he gathered to tell us what matters ethically to actors.

The actors in the panel discussion are: Jon Bennett, Oliver Darrow, Dana Sutton,Lynch Travis, and David Wolber.
