A State-of-the-Union Play-by-Play

BY BARTON BUND

9pm - Switched my tv to PBS; the most boring, and therefore the most objective.

9:01 - Before President Obama enters, Jim Lehrer debates to himself whether the speech will cover the 800-pound gorilla, or the elephant, in the room.

9:02 - Obama is still nowhere to be seen. Lehrer crafts some sort of filler joke which makes him sound all the more doddering.

THE A-TEAM: 'Sex and the City' for Dudes?

BY MZ. MANNERS, VIGILANTE GUERILLA

If you're in trouble and no one else can help, you might as well contact us here at a2ethics.org. The A-Team returns to the cultural slopbucket, part of a delicious trough of strange summer entertainment. A group of veterans who are part of an elite unit go underground, become a mean, clever band of vigilante pranksters, and solve the major problems in society. The A-Team, ethically speaking, is problematic.

Why 'ROBIN HOOD'?

By BARCODE 2x

The new Robin Hood is released this weekend, and he takes on a broader political agenda that will satisfy a very divided audience base. In Ridley Scott's new telling of the old British vigilante's beginnings, Robin Hood is less interested in robbing the rich and giving to the poor than he is in alleviating tax burdens. Is this the changing face of vigilantism?

Looking for Social Justice in STAR WARS

By MIZ MANNERS, THE SLEDGEHAMMER OF BLOGS

We can't deny the impact that the Star Wars films have had on our culture. It formed a foundation for much popular entertainment for generations. I'm here to rock the foundation.

After re-watching the films recently, I have determined that the racist, sexist galaxy that they live in is nowhere I want to be.

The NPR Fundraising Experience

By BARTON BUND

At one point, it is possible that Linda Yohn of WEMU 89.1 FM told me to put a dog leash on her. We were discussing the WEMU dog leash you could receive for your donation of $100, and somehow we stumbled into some territory. It didn't even occur to me at the time, but friends asked me about it later.

It's best to return to the message. We need your pledge of support. Support the station that gives you your news, jazz, blues, call right now at 888...

GIL SCOTT-HERON: What Should We Expect from our Artists?

By BARCODE 2x

Gil Scott-Heron's new record I'm New Here arrived this year with a lot of expectations on it. The poet/singer/songwriter of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised had not recorded in nearly two decades, had done time in prison, had struggled with addiction, and the sudden return of this beloved artist was eagerly awaited by fans.

Music is Amoral: Catching Up With Glenn Watkins

By BARTON BUND

Meeting the world's foremost expert on Composer Carlo Gesualdo is as intimidating as it might sound. The musicologist and author is almost singlehandedly responsible for reviving the work of the infamous murderer/genius chromaticist.
