An Artist's Bill of Rights

By BARTON BUND

What special rights are granted to artists in our world? This is an evolving list, laying out the rights of artists:

  1. Artists have the right to incorporate art and ideas that came before into their own work.
  2. Artists have the right to throw away all that came before.
  3. Artists maintain the right to shape and define moral parameters in their culture.
  4. The right to speak for their public.
  5. The right to speak truth to power.
  6. The right to live outside of cultural norms.
  7. Artists have the right to exile, rather than conventional punishment, in cases of nonviolent crimes.
  8. Artists have the right to transform art into political action.
  9. Artists have the right to interpret history, and to write it.
  10. Artists have the right to define, and to reject, their own generation.
